Abstract

|
Transference and resistance are necessary elements and short-cuts needed for the acquisition of insight. They appear and disappear frequently all through therapeutic processes like a mirage. Even though it is notpossible according to some interpretations, psychoanalytic or psychotherapeutic processes need to continue the persistent and repetitive endeavors. Above all it is very important that we catch many clues of transference and resistance, and properly interpret them in optimal timing, because these involvements have an effect on the therapeutic process as decisive factors. It is true that many novices have difficulty in doing interpretation. The therapist’s interpretation on transference and resistance plays a bridging role to help the patient to gain insightful self-understanding, and that is also ceaselessly repetitive work. Unless the patient gets this kind of involvement, he shall not be given the opportunity for self-understanding. It is clear that the psychoanalytic goal is self-understanding and changes of psychic structure. Even if the transference and resistance are nothing but temporary phenomena toward that understanding and changing process, many patients have to work through it by means of endless therapist’s interpretative works, and it seems to be an inevitable for the structural changes in their psyche. We can say that psychoanalysis might be a kind of rearranging work of one’s personal past history. The basic final goal of psychoanalysis is self-understanding of one’s past, and overcoming the present psychological pain, and recharging one’s power for possible future changes.
